Newsletter 09/07/2015 Print PDF

Dear Parents,

This newsletter gives you information about important events taking place during Term 6. It has been a busy start to the new term. Year 6 have continued their swimming lessons and thoroughly enjoyed their session last week. Hazel and Maple Class have started a project in the Trussell Trust Garden.

Congratulations to Mrs. Webb

Everyone at Woodlands would like to congratulate Mrs. Webb and her husband on the happy news that they are expecting another child in November.

Staff changes 2015-2016

Next academic year will see some changes to our teaching staff.

Mrs. Cavendish will be retiring from teaching after 14 years of service to our school. We wish her a relaxing and well-earned retirement. Mr. Martindale will be moving into a new position as Vice-Principal of a large junior school in Portsmouth after 6 years at Woodlands. Mrs. Leake will be leaving at the end of the academic year after 5 years in the Nursery.

We wish all three teachers good luck with whatever they do next. We are obviously sad to see them leave as they have all shown excellent dedication and have displayed consistently brilliant teaching standards during their time at Woodlands. We also know that, after 6 years with virtually no teaching-staff turnover, it was inevitable that at some point there would be some changes. To ensure a smooth transition for all pupils involved in moves to Year 2 and Year 6, we have already appointed a new member of staff to teach in Year 2 (Miss Barnes) and Mrs Webb will be teaching in Year 6 for the first term of the 2015-16 academic year.

Mrs Nouwens will be teaching in Year 5 for the whole of the next academic year and Miss Law will be teaching full time in Year 4.

Non-uniform Day – Friday 12th June

Please can all children bring in a bottle for the Summer Fete Bottle Tombola. Any alcoholic bottles/drinks will need to be brought in by parents. All bottles will be used in the Summer Fete Bottle Tombola on Thursday 18th June. If you don’t have a bottle then please bring in a £1.

Attendance & Term-time leave of absence - Reminder

Changes to the regulations remove references to family holiday and extended leave as well as the statutory threshold of ten school days. As a result of this I will not be able to grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Any requests for leave of absence must be submitted at least 4 weeks before the start date.

The following reasons for taking a family holiday will not be acceptable:

  • It’s cheaper to go during term time;
  • First family holiday abroad;
  • Family holiday with grandparents / other relatives;
  • It’s a special occasion eg. birthday;
  • Only time I can get off work (unless there is a letter from an employer confirming this and the circumstances are exceptional);
  • Someone else booked the holiday and they got the term dates wrong.

If your child is unwell please make sure you telephone the school. If we have not received a phone call we may need to make a home visit to check your child is safe.

The Jesse Jones Cup – Monday 15th June – Starting at 9.30am

Once there will again be a Jesse Jones Cup for Willow, Beech and Maple (in the morning) and a second tournament for Ash, Cedar and Hazel that will run in the afternoon (starting at 1.30pm). The pupils who want to take part will be divided into teams containing a mixture of boys, girls and children from different year groups. The two finals will take place at the end of the day starting at approximately 2.45pm. This should be a fun day and the winning teams will be presented with the Jesse Jones Cup. If your child is taking part then you are welcome to come and watch the matches. The PTA will be selling hot and cold drinks, and other light refreshments.

Contact Details

If your landline, mobile numbers, home address or emergency contacts change then please inform the school immediately. It is vital that we have up to date information so that we can contact you quickly if your child becomes unwell in school.

Woodlands will be closed on Monday 22nd June for a Teacher Development Day.

Dear Parents,

This newsletter gives you information about important events taking place during the Summer Term. It has been a busy start to the new term. Year 6 have started their swimming lessons and thoroughly enjoyed the first two sessions. Today all of the classes had a special visit from our local Police Community Support Officers and the Street Watch volunteers. While this was happening Hazel Class were busy making wonderful Magna Carta Banners with professional artist David Podger.

Tomorrow all of the Key Stage 2 classes will be visiting Salisbury Cathedral to support their work celebrating 800 years of Magna Carta. Key Stage 1 will be visiting Old Wardour Castle for a special Castles Day on the 8th July and Oaktree Nursery and Acorn Class will be visiting Marwell Zoo on the 9th July. The Woodlands PTFA have agreed to fund the entrance fees and transport costs for all of these trips so they will all be completely free.

KS1 & KS2 SATs

Good attendance is crucial at any time of year and we only permit absence of leave during term time in exceptional circumstances. During the SATs it is particularly important that your child is in school. The information from these tests is used to inform the teaching and learning of your child. We would ask that parents of Year 2 and Year 6 in particular ensure that their children attend school during Term 5. The 2015 Key Stage 2 statutory tests will take place from Monday 11th May to Friday 15th May.

Reading with your child – Wednesday 20st May (Venue: School Library / Year 5 & Year 6 Shared Area)

All parents are invited to come into school and read with your child on Wednesday 20st May at 2.45pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served.
